TheSpreadIt corrects material factual errors when they are confirmed. We distinguish corrections from ordinary updates, additions and changes made as a developing story evolves.
What We Correct
Corrections may involve names, dates, quotations, statistics, locations, descriptions of events, attribution, captions or other factual statements that were wrong or materially misleading when published. We also correct headlines and social copy when the error appears there.
How Corrections Appear
Minor typographical or grammatical fixes that do not change meaning may be made without a note. Material factual corrections should be reflected in the article and accompanied by a clear correction or clarification note explaining what changed. When a story is updated because new information became available, we may identify the update without calling the earlier version erroneous.
How to Request a Review
Send the article URL, identify the exact statement you believe is wrong, explain the correction you are requesting and include supporting documentation or a primary source when possible. General disagreement with an analysis or opinion is not by itself a factual correction.
Review Process
A correction request is reviewed against the reporting, source material and any new documentation provided. We may contact the person submitting the request or the article author for additional information. We do not promise a particular outcome simply because a correction has been requested.
Transparency
Our goal is to preserve the integrity of the published record. When a correction materially changes a reader’s understanding of a story, the notice should be prominent enough for readers to understand the change.
