Robin Thicke is embarrassed by the way he handled his split with his high school sweetheart, Paula Patton. Talking to The New York Times, Thicke confessed that he needed to release the very personal Paula album, but he should have given it away for free.
In an effort to win back his wife, Robin Thicke embarrassed himself over and over and still failed. In late 2013, rumors began flying that after becoming a worldwide superstar thanks to his hit and controversial song “Blurred Lines,” Robin Thicke started cheating on Paula Patton, his wife of nine years.
Photos and videos of Thicke flirting with young models in America and Europe began circulating on the Internet. It was often claimed that like Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, Patton and Thicke, who had been together since they were teenagers, had been in an open marriage.
Embarrassed by her husband’s cheating scandal and alleged drug problem, Patton filed for divorce in early 2014 – what followed was strange and confusing.
Determined to win his wife back, Robin Thicke embarked on the “Paula Tour” where he conducted countless interviews begging his estranged wife to come back.
After releasing his flopping lead single “Get Her Back” in May 2014, he followed through with an entire album dedicated to the mother of his only child called Paula.
He also gave multiple performances of “Get Her Back” hoping the touching lyrics would move the Precious and Jumping the Broom actress.
The album failed, peaking at #9 on the Billboard 200 and selling 24,000 copies in its first week of release. Moreover, to add insult to injury, Patton left him for good.
Looking back at that period, Thicke said he is ashamed of the actions he took. The “4 the Rest of My Life” singer shared:
“ I came home, and my best friend of 20 years, Craig Crawford, said, ‘I saw your BET performance. I gotta be honest with you, buddy. You’re kind of playing yourself, You look like a sucker. And it hit me that I’d lost my perspective. What I thought was romantic was just embarrassing.”
Thicke explained that he regrets not giving away the album for free. He shared:
“I was struggling through my toughest time, and I decided to share it. And I remember my team and my record company didn’t want me to put it out, but they stuck by me. In hindsight, the only thing I would have done differently was, I wouldn’t have promoted it or sold it. I would have given it away. That would have kept the purity of the message intact.”
Thicke has divorced Patton and is now dating a 20-year-old model named April Love Geary.
