Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl costume has been unveiled, fans have mixed reactions and they are voicing their concerns. CBS has shared two pictures of Glee actress Melissa Benoist in her full Supergirl costume designed by Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who kept some elements from the past, but added a touch of modernity via the use of darker colors, the midriff being covered and tights.

The terms “Melissa Benoist Supergirl Costume” and “Supergirl Melissa Benoist” are trending and maybe the folks at CBS should avoid Twitter for few days.

Friday, Supergirl writer/producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, who started shooting the pilot episode of the series, unveiled the first pictures of the superhero – a headshot and a full body shot that revealed the much anticipated costume.

Melissa Benoist‘s Supergirl costume was designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood, who issued a statement explaining that she wanted to find the perfect blend of vintage and modern.

The designer, who also created costumes for the heroes in the DC Comics shows, The Flash and Arrow, stated:

“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”

Atwood made numerous changes to the original costume, the light blue and red are gone. She opted for a more darker burgundy/maroon and navy blue.

Unlike the traditional costume, the new one has a longer top that covers the character’s midriff. Other major changes also took place on the lower portion of Supergirl’s costume.

No more bare legs for this modern-day heroine, she is now sporting burgundy tights and matching suede knee-high boots.

It appears that the designer was going for the look that Henry Cavill had as Superman in the Man of Steel.

Melissa Benoist, who is famous for her roles in the Oscar-winning movie Whiplash and Fox’s hit series Glee, recently opened up about the costume and confessed that she feared showing off too much skin.

Benoist told reporters that she fears the micro-mini hemline, but she is brave enough to face anything. She confessed:

“It’s a little daunting. It’s daunting, but that’s good. I like being pushed. I work well under pressure.”

Miss Melissa Benoist went on to talk about how much she loves playing Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl. The star shared:

“What’s so wonderful about her is that she is such a relatable character, amongst her powers. What I’m the most excited about is telling a story about a human being really realizing their potential and their strength, and I think that’s something that everyone will root for and want in their own lives – I’m really excited about that.”

As stated above, the headline “Melissa Benoist Supergirl Costume” is making waves on the internet and many fans are disappointed by the costume.

Some say that it looks like a cheap Hollywood costume and others are blasting the actress picked for the role. One person tweeted:

“Melissa Benoist as Supergirl is a terrible choice for CBS New Superhero Series.”

Another claimed that the show will be cancelled before it even begins:

“This looks like a low budget production and poor casting that CBS is going to regret. Sooner or later they’ll cancel it.”

But few fans are defending the show. A commentator said that people need to calm down and give the show a try before criticizing it. The tweet read:

“I cannot WAIT for the new #Supergirl show! Everyone hated The Flash costume when we first saw it. So it’s unwise to judge the show by a costume. ‘SUPERGIRL’ could be great!”

Other cast members include Calista Flockhart, who will take on the role of Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as Kara’s love interest, Jimmy Olsen. Chyler Leigh and David Harewood will also appear in the series.

This week it was announced that Helen Slater, who starred in the 1984 Supergirl and Dean Cain from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman have landed roles in the show.

But their roles have not yet been revealed. The cast is starting to shoot on Wednesday and shared their excitement with fans.
