1,000 cats rescued in China thanks to animal lovers who are internet savvy. This week, authorities in Liaoning Province, north-eastern China, apprehended 6 people, involved in animal trafficking.

The 6 individuals roamed the streets of Dalian City at night, stealing cats from owners. The group had kidnapped more than 1,000 cats in order to sell their meat and fur.

Several pet lovers, who had spotted the cat snatchers, shared their stories online. Their tales rapidly reached the police, which decided to take action.

The authorities located a cat den in a village and arrested the six criminals. Thus far, more than 300 of the cats found, have been returned to their rightful owners.

As stated above, the headline “1,000 cats rescued in China,” has appeared in the news before. On January 14, 2013, a truck carrying 1,000 cats, had an accident in Changsha.

It is believed that some of those cats were raised in provinces for the sole purpose of being eaten, but most of them were stolen from their owners.

The animals were being taken to Guangdong in order to be sold to restaurant owners. The driver of the truck was badly injured and was rushed to the hospital, leaving the 1,000 cats on the side of the road.

Few of the cats died, some ran away, and many of them were hurt. The animals were stranded for more than 24 hours, which is when a Chinese police officer named Wang Yujing, decided to use the internet to ask for help.

The authorities shared a post on Sina Weibo, a Chinese micro-blogging site, where they asked for Changsha residents to come and rescue the stranded and dying cats.

Within minutes, dozens of people showed up, and were asked to pay about $1,600 to the truck owner in order to collect the cats.

According to Care For Chinese Animals, the cats were in bad shape. The 1,000 cats rescued were crammed into bamboo cages like sardines.

Many of them were sick and all of them were starving. The group of volunteers gave the cats medication and nursed them with food, water, and milk.

Some of the cats were adopted by Changsha inhabitants, while more than 800 of them were taken to the Changsha Small Animal Protection Association.

A representative for the organization, who is only known as Hunter, has said that many of the cats rescued, have been released in different districts. Hunter explained:

“Cats reproduce fast. It’s very possible that it could cause alarm among people living in the community and lead to disaster for the feline ecosphere.”

Which implies that the circle of people snatching cats, packing them in smelly boxes, selling them to restaurants will go on forever in China.

While it is bad luck to eat kittens in the Asian country, like lobster, cat is a pricey meat in the area. Cats that are more than one year old, are kept in tiny and filthy cages outside of restaurants, and customers are invited to select the one they want to eat.

The chef then kills the cat by cutting its throat, the meat is prepared, and then served with legumes and rice.
