A Wauwatosa police detective is said to be improving after getting shot by a suspect. According to Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn, a 20-year-old man named Najee Harmon has been arrested for firing several shots at an unnamed 52-year-old Wauwatosa detective, who was investigating a burglary.
Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn announced that Najee Harmon, the criminal, who shot a Wauwatosa police detective, has been arrested, and Flynn took the opportunity to make some eye-raising comments about violent black men in America. Flynn also shared his thoughts on the fact that the African-American community will not “snitch” on one of their own even if they commit a horrible crime. Edward Flynn said:
“Two felonies he’s been arrested and convicted for and done no time.But the national media would have you believe that the criminal justice system is incarcerating young men left and right without regard for due process or the facts of the case.”
The NAACP or National Association for the Advancement of Colored People believes that Edward Flynn is wrong and that there are real racial disparities in incarceration because almost half of the 2.3 million people behind bars are minorities.
African Americans now constitute nearly 1 million of the total 2.3 million incarcerated population. African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites. Together, African American and Hispanics comprised 58% of all prisoners in 2008, even though African Americans and Hispanics make up approximately one quarter of the US population.
The law enforcer added during his press conference:
“There are hundreds of Harmons in our criminal justice system.”
Najee Harmon, 20, who has two felony convictions, (in 2011, he was convicted of battery and in 2012, he was charged with theft), was arrested as he hid in a basement of a home on Milwaukee’s north side Saturday morning.
On Friday, three officers tried to apprehend Harmon for taking part in a robbery and for stealing a car. According to Flynn, police threw tear gas into the apartment complex where the criminal was hiding, which prompted him to shoot one officer several times.
The wounded Wauwatosa police detective was rushed to the hospital as the manhunt continued. The authorities offered a $5,000 reward for information, which was enticing enough for one citizen to call them and reveal the whereabouts of the suspect.
Flynn slammed the acquaintances, who hid Harmon in their home by saying:
“The people who live in that house have not been cooperative with us.”
Flynn said that the 52-year old Wauwatosa police detective, whose identity has not been revealed, remains hospitalized in “serious but stable and improving condition.”
A neighbor talked to local media saying that Najee Harmon called her “granny” and had always been polite, which is why she is baffled by his alleged actions.
