Two Motorcycle Riders Killed: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Crash Claims Two Lives

The Laguna Seca crash has left two dead. Two motorcycle riders got killed at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca over the weekend. Officials have confirmed that Spanish racers – Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas Fernandez – died in a California hospital after a multi-bike crash.

Two motorcycle riders were killed at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California. On Sunday, thousands gathered for the second Moto America Superbike/Superstock 1000 race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca where during the first lap, a horrific accident occurred.

In what experts are calling a “chain-reaction multi-bike incident,” two racers from Spain were seriously injured. According to race officials, Bernat Martinez from Alberic, Valencia in Spain, was rushed to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) in Monterey. Doctors were unable to save the 35-year-old man.

As for Daniel Rivas Fernandez, of Moana Galicia, Spain, he was airlifted by REACH Medical Air Services to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where he died at the age of 27. MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey said in a statement:

“I really don’t have any words to describe what we all feel.First and foremost, is the loss to the families and loved ones. Our sincere condolences goes out to each and every one of them as well as the MotoAmerica family. They are in our thoughts and prayers.”

Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, also presented his condolences to the families of the racers. Campbell shared:

“We are deeply saddened to learn the news of the passing of Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas.Our prayers and hearts go out to their families and teams.”

Police spokesman Cmdr. John Thornburg revealed that the deaths are being investigated. Some are saying that the thunderstorms had drenched the track ahead of the race and therefore made it difficult for the racers.

Many have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to the two racers who lost their lives at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
