Texas, a shelter cat that weighs more than 26 pounds, has been put on a diet. The fat cat was welcomed to the famous Battersea Dog and Cat Home in London, England after his owner died.

It is believed that the former owner overfed the animal. The Battersea Dog and Cat Home takes in about 3000 cats and dogs every year, but the 8-year-old long-haired Texas is by far the biggest cat, the shelter has ever seen.

The cat’s impressive size prompted staff workers to name him Texas after the second largest state in America (the largest state is Alaska with 1,717,854 Kilometers followed by Texas with 696,621 Kilometers).

SuiLi Weight, a team leader at the home in South West London, explained that Texas’ size is so unusual that they had to get him a custom made pen with a double-wide staircase up to his bed and extra bedding to make sure he is comfortable.

The staff member of Battersea Dog and Cat Home said:

“Many people may be starting to think about losing a few pounds in the countdown to Christmas, but for Texas this really is a very serious health issue he’s battling. At Battersea we take in around 3,000 cats every year, so we see cats of all shapes and sizes, but Texas is by far the biggest cat we’ve ever seen.”

Weight went on to say that some people might find it funny to see such a big cat, but this is no laughing matter. Weight said that Texas is morbidly obese and if they do not put him on a diet, and make him exercise, he might die.

The expert explained that Texas, the shelter cat needs the diet because he is three times the size of a normal kitty:

“Some people might think it’s funny to see a cat this big but it is in fact extremely sad to see an animal which is suffering so badly.Overfeeding your cat is a form of cruelty, you may think you are showing it love by giving it treats and feeding it human foods, but it’s in fact an incredibly cruel thing to do in the long run.”
