Rajchel, 23, was studying nursing at the University of Medicine in Posada, a village in southern Poland. According to Spanish police, Rajchel climbed on the ledge of the bridge in order to take a selfie and slipped.

Sylwia Rajchel lost her footing, and fell 15 feet onto the concrete footings of the Puente de Triana. Paramedics did manage to revive Rajchel on the scene of the accident, but she rapidly went into cardiac arrest.

The young woman was rushed to the Hospital of Traumatology, where her condition was described as very serious. Few hours after the fall, Rajchel was pronounced dead.

Sylwia Rajchel’s grieving mother, Bernadeta, 44, told Polish media:

“Going to Spain was a dream come true for my daughter. She had taught herself the language and was hoping to work there in the future after finishing her studies. She was a beautiful, smiling girl who had her whole life ahead of her. It’s hard to believe what’s happened, that I will never see Sylvia again.”

According to reporters in Poland, Rajchel’s father is already in the country to collect the body. Sylwia Rajchel’s selfie related accident has prompted officials to address the lack of safety barriers around The Triana Bridge, which is one of the most photographed and visited landmarks in Seville. A city official said in a statement:

“This was a tragic accident and we are looking to make that stretch of boulevard along the river safer.”

The famous Triana Bridge that was built between 1845 and 1852 is now surrounded by local hot spots such as bars, restaurants and clubs.

Sylwia Rajchel’s selfie death is the second one to take place on the Iberian Peninsula this year.

In August, a couple died after falling off the Cabo da Roca in Portugal, as their children, then 5 and 6 years old, watched.

  1. Why should they have to put up a safety barrier? Any normal person would know that it was unwise to climb up there. My condolences to the family, but it sounds like this woman’s vanity killed her.
