Stephen Colbert taped an emotional message to the people of France that aired at the end of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Friday night. Saturday Night Live alum Cecily Strong also spoke directly to the mourning country in French and reminded it to be strong.

Colbert sent out his thoughts and prayers to the grieving nation, which lost 129 of their own after terrorists perpetrated attacks on bars, Le Bataclan, a concert hall, and Le Stade de France, a big stadium. The seven gunmen/suicide bombers, who detonated explosive belts, also injured about 350 people – with 80 of them listed in critical condition. Colbert told viewers:

“Folks, we end tonight’s show with a heavy heart because we taped all of tonight’s show, and then we found out about the horrific attacks in Paris today. I know not much is known right now. We do know there have been many deaths and the crisis is still ongoing.”

He went on to reveal that French President François Hollande, who was at the Stade de France during the bombings, and President Barack Obama have held separate press conferences to say that they plan to fight ISIL. Colbert added:

“President Hollande declared a state of emergency and President Obama has promised that the United States will do whatever it takes to bring those terrorists to justice. We add our thoughts and prayers to everyone in Paris.”

Colbert took a long pause, visibly holding back tears, and concluded by:

“And now, we’ll see you on Monday, goodnight.”

The French national police are currently looking for the only suicide bomber, who made it out alive, a 26-year-old man named Abdeslam Salah, who might have fled to Belgium. Saturday Night Live cast member Cecily Strong delivered a message to people residing in Paris, which was reminiscent of the statement shared after the events of September 11. Strong said:

“We stand with you. Paris is the City of Light, and here in New York City, we know that light will never go out. Our love and support is with everyone there tonight. We stand with you.”

The same message was repeated in French.
