‘Star Trek’ TV Reboot Adds To Franchise’s Promising Future

A Star Trek TV reboot is in the works, and fans are very excited about the news, but they are divided when it comes to the two very different ideas being considered. Rumors are running, claiming that two companies have pitched Star Trek TV reboot ideas to television networks for the fall of 2015 or early 2016. While nothing has been confirmed or denied, it appears that CBS might be the network airing the Star Trek reboot.

Star Trek TV reboot

A Star Trek TV reboot is set for this fall or late winter, and it might be on CBS, according to sources. The original Star Trek series also called The Original Series debuted in 1966 and ran for three seasons on NBC before being cancelled in 1969. It starred William Shatner in the role of Captain Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock and DeForest Kelley as Leonard McCoy.

It appears that X-Men producer, Bryan Singer has teamed up with Rob Burnett, the executive producer of Late Show with David Letterman and the president and CEO of Worldwide Pants, along with writers Christopher McQuarrie and Geoffrey Thorne for a Star Trek TV reboot currently entitled Star Trek: Federation.

The new Star Trek: Federation is set in a new era beyond the Deep Space Nine and Voyager crews. The forthcoming Star Trek TV reboot has been inspired by the popular fan-made Star Trek: Axanar. Burnett has been actively tweeting about the Star Trek TV reboot:

There is another Star Trek TV reboot that is also being pitched, according to Latino Review. This time around, writer and producer J. Michael Straczynski of The Real Ghostbusters and Babylon 5 has collaborated with Dark SkiesBryce Zabel for Star Trek: Re-Boot the Universe where they put the original characters – Kirk, Spock, McCoy – “in the most durable concept ever created in sci-fi TV. The five – year – mission.”

With J. J. AbramsStar Trek 3 set to be released in 2016 and the franchise celebrating its 50th anniversary, having a Star Trek TV reboot seems to be the logical thing to do.

  1. Enough retooling. No more. A new series should have a new cast and crew. A “next, next generation” would be welcome. A rehash of the original is just not a good idea.

  2. Star Date : 3-29.15
Totally suspenseful. Kept me on the edge of my seat. All actors superb & committed.
Hope the project is completed and aired soon.

  3. a Reboot to Star Trek is okay but let’s see they’ll dedicated this to Leonard Nimoy for now!

  4. I am old enough to have see TOS when it was new and loved every second. However, I think that a contemporary version would go over well, as has the latest movies have.

  5. As long as they stay faithful to the original concept which portrayed a positive view of the future and put together a cast that has the same great chemistry of the original cast, I don’t care if they go modern or traditional.

  6. GREAT!!!! I will be watching– at least we will have something of quality to watch, there are not many choices for that anymore!

    1. I was thinking just the opposite. With 12 Monkeys, Agent Carter, The Flash, Doctor Who and Star Wars Rebels all on the air I get plenty of TV with a science fiction bent and can always use more. Hopefully the new Trek, if they pick it, up will go for gritty vs PC stories.

  7. Star Trek: Federation sounds like the better of the two ideas. Certainly would be interesting to see the next chapter in timeline progression past TNG/DS9/Voyager era. Hope it comes to fruition!

  8. I submit my name in the hat to be apart of the new cast members. I dont care what part it, I dont even care if it is that of a lowly space alien janitor.

  9. Modern for sure. The franchise needs new, FRESH ideas and settings. Not re-hashes that the uber fans will get upset about.

  10. I think that to reboot it and start over with others in the main roles would be horrible. I like the idea of a new Star Trek, that is based on TOS and set in the future.. it gives it more possibilities, and more latitude. I’m excited to see the series grow again, and to have programming that I’m not ashamed to have my grand kids watch.

  11. The Axanar short is what I’d hoped the new Star Trek movies were going to be, instead of the horrid car-chase movies we’ve been given. But, if they want to jump ahead another 20-50 years in a new series, that would be interesting.

  12. Why? I never understand rebooting. The movie has rebooted so there are new characters there. Do they want to do it again. Why? There is so much possibulities extending the serries rather than redoing it.

  13. there are two places they could do this series either in the gap between TOS and next gen or in the future after next gen, voyager, and deep space 9, either is ok as long as they follow what has already been set by these series and not some alt. timeline bullcrap. either way they have lots of people to pick their brains from all the shows to get things right. fans want more trek but please make it good trek

  14. I say Modern. The struggle of the federation of planets against its ruthless enemies is inspiring, entertaining, and emotionally engaging. Not only that, it is resonant with our own struggles against religious and political idealogies that threaten democracy and freedom.

  15. I prefer both. And even though I like J.J. Abrams version of Star Trek (primarily because it was a motion picture re-boot which keeps the Trek franchise alive and…well it keeps it alive anyway)Abrams made a major mistake destroying both Vulcan and Romulus before the credits finish rolling.

Luckily I am not alone in this and some fans have decided to continue the alternative stream as if the Abrams Universe didn’t happen.

One of the fascinating things about Star Trek and writer creativity is the creation of interesting life forms (especially non-humanoid types) and how these inter-act both with the Federation and with each other.

I would be for an entire Star Trek channel except I know the level of creativity would drop to negative numbers since not all writers are able to sustain the levels of creativity needed for something like this.

Michael Straczynski is an excellent choice, Bryan Singer not so good though I am willing to forgive him his mistakes on the X-Men. Here he would have more freedom to make the series “his” unlike the X-Men where he made the same mistake Abrams made with Star Trek. He killed Professor X, Cyclops, and Jean Grey and took Magneto, Mistique and Rouge’s powers from them permanently… bad call.

So my vote (I voted twice I ’68 and ’69 to keep it on back then) is for both. I for as much Star Trek as we can get and it still be a quality show. (Remember the original had some of the heavy weights of Science Fiction writing the stories).

  16. This shows a lack of new ideas in the entertainment industry. We need forward thinking writers in the industry; however, it may be difficult in this rush culture.

  17. I’d rather have one that takes place after Deep Space 9 and Voyager. A reboot of the original just seems pointless since the show moved way beyond it.

  18. A high quality modern space adventure series is past due. Lets take advantage of the avalanche of new digital production features to bring us into a new age. God forbid that we have to watch the horrible acting of (you know who)in the original production over again. I don’t think that a rehash could maintain current day viewers. If you really need to watch the original production then buy the series and watch it to your hart’s content. Believe me I much prefer my rose tinted recollection than the harsh reality of comparing the actual production to current technical expectations.

  19. Hope it doesn’t follow the stupid J.J. Abrams Trek universe. Learn from the past, don’t destroy it. Enterprise was good till it became a single Xindi story arch.

  20. All’s they are doing is taking advantage of a great TV series to make money. Look what happened when JJ Abrams directed the last 2 Star Trek movies. The whole universe was destroyed for money. I’m sure, G Roddenberry is turning in his grave.

  21. Excited? Hogwash. Leave the series alone, and — here’s an idea — come up with some new, creative ideas! Quit “rebooting”, remaking, sequeling, prequeling, and making shows and movies about freakin’ toys and video games! Isn’t there one creative person left ion Hollyweird?

  22. The Original Series, The Next Generation and Voyager were all brilliant series. If this new series can take inspiration from their methods of touching on social, political and economic issues relevant to their days without being too obvious about it, maintain excellent character development and have some witty humor thrown into the mix, this show will be very successful too.

I am 17 years old, I have only recently seen the older series. I have been holding out for a television show with the same kind of intellect and artistry displayed by these 3 series, and have yet to find it again. I hope this new series can do it! I eagerly await it!

  23. Please bring back the tribbles in at least one episode. ☺️ An updated version with the technology today would be great?

  24. I’d love to see something in the original spirit with good actors. And that doesn’t try to ‘star too many people’ like a soap opera. I’d like it to tackle sociological, political, and character issues head on and not be afraid to take a stand. I’d like it to be thoughtful and intelligent. I’d like it to actually be in space, actually meeting new races often. I’d especially like it not to be a show about people spending all their time in a ‘glorified video game’, a fiction inside a fiction. And of course have some action and adventure. I don’t think at that point the *names* of the crew matter. It would be bad if the ‘technology level’ gets so high the technology solves problems rather than the people having to solve problems. Keep the tech as low as makes sense. And no ‘superman’ characters that magically solve problems either!

  25. I notice when something negative is mentioned about the current JJ Abrams reboot they censors don’t post it…..

  26. ..this isn’t news..the rumors have been going around since JJ’s first movie came out..and, I agree with some above..it should NOT be a reboot but the next Enterprise..another 100 years later than Picard.

  27. No reboot…absolutely not. Shatner, Nimoy, Kelly, Doohan, Koenig, Nichols, Takei…those are the Star Trek Enterprise crew members. I don’t want to see anyone else play the characters, nor do I want anyone (like JJ Abrams) screw up Star Trek canon. That’s why I haven’t seen the JJ Abrams reboots and have no intention of ever seeing them.

On the other hand, a new series taking place after The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager would be most welcome.

  28. I guarantee you the TV goons will screw it all all up with poor writing, direction and actor selections.

  29. Torn. I would love to see a TV series in the same vein as the original, but it’s difficult to separate original actors from a beloved series for a retool (the last Chekov was a joke, for example.) A prequel or a sister, same-time story might be better. I know I would prefer the peaceful mission to war. We don’t need yet another TV show – or movie – that is all about hatred and violence. If it’s a poorly done classic (that is, not far better than the original) or if it’s a violent future version, it won’t take long before I give up. I’ll definitely give either version a try though. I always do.

  30. Couldn’t it be something else other than the Constitution class Enterprise?!? That is suppose to be Christopher Pike’s ship!

Great story otherwise. Awesome you could get so many great actors to be in this and some to even reprise their roles.

  31. Here’s what I see happening.
–First of all, it won’t be pure science fiction, as the original was. It’ll just be common, ‘modern’ stories that just happen to take place in a futuristic, outer space setting.
–Like ‘Next Generation’ (which I didn’t like, by the way), they’ll go too far trying to make strange looking beings from other planets and it becomes a laughable costume show.
–Half the crew members will be screwing the other half, and there will be the obligatory interracial and homosexual relationships; you know, to be politically correct and all, plus there will be that one couple that everybody thinks ought to be together but it’ll get dragged out and probably by midway into a second season (if it lasts that long), they’ll finally ‘hook up’.
–There will be the obligatory homage to Gene Roddenberry, though the show will in all likelihood have NONE of his imagination.
–All the actors/actresses will be ‘hot’, and they’ll sexualize EVERYTHING!
–In trying to tie in with everything Star Trek before it, they’ll have Jonathan Frakes direct some episodes and those will suck even worse than the show as a whole.
–The effects will be great, but the stories will be so weak that the effects will outshine them.

In short, it’s probably going to suck. 50/50 whether it’s a ratings success or not, given the propensity of many people to actually watch mindless TV.
