A San Francisco police chase concluded with the deaths of three people, who were attending a Super Bowl event – their identities have not been revealed.

On Saturday, several officers from the San Francisco Police Department and members of the California Highway Patrol took part in a very brief but deadly car chase. According to the authorities, it all began when the police attempted to get the driver of a white Chevrolet to pull over.

The vehicle was seen rotating in circles/making doughnuts in the middle of a neighborhood street. Instead of stopping the stunt and addressing the police, the driver sped off, prompting a wild chase. California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Vu Williams said:

“The car drove away and the officer gave chase but stopped the pursuit after the car began racing through red lights.”

The chase was short-lived – the car crashed into a taxi and burst into flames, killing all three people, according to Mr. Williams. San Francisco authorities did not reveal the names of the victims, who died in the crash. Asked why did the police engage in a chase only to end it fairly rapidly, Williams defended the officers by saying:

“…the officer made a judgment call to end the pursuit because of the people out on the streets due to Super Bowl activities. About 2 miles from where the chase began, thousands were in Super Bowl City waiting to see Alicia Keys perform and Metallica was playing at AT&T Park, six blocks from where the white sedan was first spotted.”

Williams added:

“The risks to continue chasing outweighed stopping the car.”

He said the taxi driver had minor injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. A passenger in the taxi fled the scene on foot and police have not been able to locate him. Friends and family members of those killed in the crash said that the trio had been at the NFL Experience at the Moscone Center and were driving back home. Police are currently investigating the circumstances of the accident.

  1. Unless they’re shooting at the cops, they shouldn’t have chased them. Get the plate number and deal with them later. Three people were killed and for what?

    1. Did you even read the article? The police did not chase them. He let them go
and they later crashed into the taxi. He quit chasing them because of the super bowl and all the people around.
