Patti Davis: Current candidates would appall Ronald Reagan and push him out of the GOP

Patti Davis claimed that the current candidates running for president of the United States would appall her father. Davis, an accomplished author and daughter of President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan, stated in a recent interview that her late father would not be welcomed by members of the GOP because he would be for gun control, amnesty and doing something about climate change.

Patti Davis said that the current candidates eyeing the Republican Party nomination for president in the 2016 United States presidential election would appall her late father, President Ronald Reagan.

In a recent interview with SiriusXM Progress hosted by Michelangelo Signorile, Davis, a famous and controversial author, and daughter of First Lady Nancy Reagan, more or less asked Ted Cruz to stop bringing up her father’s name at every debate and campaign stop because they are nothing alike.

According to Davis, a former Playboy model, who battled drug addiction and eating disorder, Mr. Reagan, who once left the Democratic Party would have parted ways with the GOP if he was still alive. Asked about Cruz’s constant mention of her father, Miss Davis stated:

“It may be this week he’s doing it more than the others. But they all kind of do it. But yet, they are so not like him. My father would be so appalled at what’s going on. He would be so appalled at these candidates. I don’t think he would be a Republican. And if another Ronald Reagan came along right now, I don’t think the Republican Party would accept him.”

According to her book, The Way I See It: An Autobiography, Davis, who dropped her father’s last name for her mother’s maiden name, was often at odds with the former commander-in-chief because of their different political views. The father and daughter were estranged for several years, but reconnected during his fight with Alzheimer’s disease.

Davis said in the interview that the failed assassination attempt on Reagan by John Hinckley Jr. in 1981 had pushed him to take a different stance on gun legislation. She shared:

“He came out for the Brady bill (a bill named after Jim Brady, Reagan’s former press secretary who was paralyzed after being shot during the assassination attempt) I think, it was 1991,I don’t think he’d ever be able to conceive what’s going on now, the amount of gun violence or weaponry.”

While she had no real opinion on Mr. Donald Trump, (other than the fact that he is not fit for the White House), she did, however, share her thoughts on Jeb Bush, whose father served as Reagan’s vice president. Davis said:

“Well, I don’t think he’s presidential, do you?”

Davis, who stated in the past that she was physically abused by her mother when she was hooked on painkillers, revealed that they have forgiven each other and have reconnected. Davis said that the 94-year-old rarely talks about politics, but made an exception on the historic Supreme Court’s marriage equality ruling. Davis confessed:

“She was very happy about that decision. I don’t talk to her too much about politics currently. She’s 94 and I think she has the right to live out the rest of life with a little bit of peace, which cannot be found in the current political scene. But you know, I don’t think she’s too happy about anybody on the current roster right now. I mean, there’s nobody presidential. Not in that group anyway.”

  1. I don’t think Patti Davis knew her father at all. I’m not sure she knows her mother, either. She had a completely different outlook on her parents during her dad’s presidency. Now that he’s passed and her mother is quite elderly and neither can rebut her comments, she suddenly knows all. What a crock! Let her vote for Hilary. They are two of a kind. They wouldn’t know the truth if hit them in the face.

    1. And you would. You’re all talk. Why don’t you run for public office and lets see about your life. Otherwise, you should not judge others lest ye be judge, but much more harshly.

    2. The wording in this article, I feel is neutral enough to show exactly who Ms. Davis is. I don’t think it characterizes her as a reliable resource. It’s actually informative in that it shows how badly drug addiction can fry your frontal lobe.

    3. Oh gosh darn it. Raygun was totally unqualified to be prez. He had alszhimers during most of his term. When you look back and try to see where this country and the presidency became a joke…start right here with this man, his wife and their seances.

  2. assuming she really said all this, its obvious that: a) she’s a democrat, like her brother; &/or b) she did too many drugs back in the 1960’s (& still today perhaps?). For RR would say something more along the lines of “we all ready have gun control laws, we need only IMPLEMENT them.” And….”the right to bear arms…” is constitutional and need not be infringed by Government. Nut jobs as well as organized conspiracies against any individual can succeed with or without guns, with or without stringent gun control laws in order to perpetrate violence upon ANY individual(s). The problem is mankind, who seeks power, control & property of others by pulling the triggers, charging usury interest rates, lying-cheating-stealing, manipulating “news,” taxes, etc….and not the weapons themselves, true charitable organizations, nor sages who “tell it like it is” at the risk of not being “politically correct.” Jesus Christ came, pointed this out and was crucified for threatening the “status quo.” Methinks, He’d suffer a similar fate, from current politico-social institutions, if He had come in THIS TIME, not 2000 years ago. But next time (our time?) He’s coming “In Power & in Might” and “every knee shall bow….”

  3. According to Davis, who battled drug addiction. Well now that explains her rants. Mr. Clinton started the White House on a down hill slide and since the 2007 debate the democrats have made it into 3 ring circus.

  4. The only comments Ronald Reagan ever made supporting gun control are dated after his Alzheimers diagnosis in 1989. Everything else he strictly adhered to individual freedom of law abiding citizins, even after he was shot.

  5. Her parents were doing what they felt was best when she was rebellious and doing drugs and couldn’t see how they were trying to help her. She hated her father so much that she dropped his last name! She hated her mother but took her maiden name….What?

I find it interesting that she has recently chosen to “make amends” with her now 94 year old mother..I think it’s more like “oh, there’s a huge inheritance coming my way if I play my cards right and pretend I love my mother”

  6. It is intuitively obvious that Patti Davis, being unable to build on her Father’s legacy, must resort to try to tear it down. She has a petty mind born of a mischievous tongue and is correct in one thing; the current crop of politicians are not worthy to be mentioned in the same breath. RR made this country great again, and respected again until the current group have cracked away and torn down what he built. SAD!!

  7. She would do well to view some of her dad’s old speeches so she could have a clue as to what his guiding principles were. I feel sorry for the 2 or 3 people that might take her seriously.

  8. kargsbarg, you forget it was Reagan’s letter that passed the assault rifle ban when Bill Clinton was president… so you clearly have no idea what Reagan would say.

  9. She is right !!! Reagan was not a conservative so he wouldn’t like Trump.
Reagan gave Amnesty to over 4 million illegals and then did nothing to secure the border. No president since Eisenhower has secured the border regardless of party affiliation. Reagan also left us a 4 Trillion dollar deficit.
Do the actions of Reagan sound conservative to you???
Reagan was no conservative. The media has lied, many people think Reagan was a conservative, even Democrats hate him because of what the “Perceive” about Reagan. It was a perfect lie delivered by a corrupt Media, brought to you and fostered by Repubs and Dems alike.
They are laughing at you, both dem and Repub because they have fooled all of you. There is not a dimes worth of difference between the 2 party’s today. Obama gets everything he wants because we only have 1 party, the Liberal/Progressive/Communist Party………

  10. Too bad RR isn’t here to speak for himself. Unfortunate that his lib kids can put words in his mouth.

  11. Ms. Davis has no more insight into what her father would think about today’s America than anyone else.

  12. When her father was alive, Patti Davis took great pleasure in torturing him and her mother with her outrageous behavior and controversial comments. She has no idea what her father would think about Ted Cruz or any other GOP candidate and invokes his name as a way to advance her personal opinions and politics. Like most liberals, she has no shame.
