Nature Valley bars recalled due to possible listeria contamination

Put down that cereal bar because Nature Valley Protein Chewy Bars and Nature Valley Simple Nut Bars are being recalled. General Mills issued the recall after learning that the sunflower kernel oil used to make the bars might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

People can blame sunflower oil for the latest Nature Valley bars recall. On June 2, 2016, in a lengthy statement issued by General Mills on the official website of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, it was revealed that the Minnesota-based company is making yet another voluntary recall.

This time around, General Mills, the owner of Nature Valley products, is pulling the bars from grocery stores after discovering that the sunflower kernel supplied by SunOpta is possibly contaminated with Listeria, a bacteria that can result in serious or life-threatening illnesses in consumers. The statement said:

“…being issued as part of sunflower kernel supplier SunOpta’s ongoing national recall for the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes. General Mills has not received any direct consumer reports of confirmed illnesses related to this supplier issue.”

According to the website, the Nature Valley Protein Chewy and Nature Valley Simple Nut Bars that were possibly contaminated were sold throughout all 50 states. This is the advice given to people, who have purchased the snack bars:

“Consumers are asked to check their pantries and dispose of the products affected by this recall, regardless of when they were purchased or what date is on the package.”

The statement went on to say:

“This recall only affects four flavors of Nature Valley’s nearly 40 different products. Nature Valley’s other products are not affected by this recall.”

  1. You have erroneously posted a picture and ingredient list of an item that is NOT part of the recall. The recall is related to sunflower kernels, the item you posted doesn’t have sunflower in it. Only the following Nature Valley items were affected:

Also, I don’t see any other reference to ‘oil’ on the FDA post or on the General Mills post. Where did you get the info that it was sunflower oil?
