Mitt Romney Never Trump Alternative Fails, Quest Ends

Mitt Romney and the “Never Trump” movement have parted ways. An aide to Romney has confirmed that he will no longer work with Erick Erickson and Bill Kristol to find a third-party candidate to run against Donald Trump.

Mitt Romney never Trump

Mitt Romney is no longer taking part in the “Never Trump” movement. In a statement issued by one of Romney’s aides, it was revealed that the former governor of Massachusetts has removed himself from the “Never Trump” train.

For months, Mr. Romney had been working hard via Twitter, press conferences, and interviews to discriminate Trump. The former Republican Party’s nominee for President of the United States in the 2012 election went as far as teaming with conservative blogger Erick Erickson and The Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol to find a person willing to run as a third-party candidate.

According to the aide, Mr. Romney has spoken to many people including Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, former Marine Gen. James Mattis, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, and even Florida Senator Marco Rubio hoping they would throw their hats in the race, but in vain.

Everyone had a different reason for not entering, as for Sasse, he blamed it on his children. Sasse said:

“… I have three small children, I’m not in a position to consider it.”

The aide went on to explain that while Romney is not longer interested in challenging Hillary Clinton and Trump himself, he has no plans to endorse the GOP nominee and is actively seeking an independent candidate. Romney spoke at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City last week where he slammed Trump:

“If we Republicans choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished. If we Republicans choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished. Isn’t he a huge business success and doesn’t he know what he’s talking about?. No, he isn’t, and no he doesn’t.”

He added:

“He inherited his business. He didn’t create it. And what ever happened to Trump Airlines? How about Trump University? And then there’s Trump Magazine and Trump Vodka and Trump Steaks and Trump Mortgage? A business genius he is not.”

Meanwhile, GOP officials are working to stop the possibility of having an independent candidate. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said that a third-party bid would be a “suicide mission” while on Fox News Sunday. He shared:

“They can try to hijack another party and get on the ballot, but, look, it’s a suicide mission for our country because what it means is that you’re throwing down not just eight years of the White House but potentially 100 years on the Supreme Court and wrecking this country for many generations….anticipating that a conservative third-party candidate would split the Republican vote and ensure a Democrat wins the White House.”
