Mike Rawlings confessed that he is more afraid of white men with guns plotting another mass shooting than Syrian refugees. Talking to MSNBC, Rawlings, the Democratic mayor of Dallas, said he plans to take in refugees in his city despite the fact that Texas Governor Greg Abbott has said otherwise.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings claimed that he is “more fearful” of white men than Syrian refugees in his city and, of course, the comments have gone viral, and the politician is under fire.
On Saturday, Mr. Rawlings appeared on MSNBC where he talked about the Syrian refugee crisis and ISIL. The former CEO of Pizza Hut said he is siding with President Barack Obama and that the Republican party is wrong to refuse to take Syrian refugees in America. He went on to create a major controversy by saying that his is more concerned about young Caucasian men strolling in the streets of Texas and planning to gun down schools and take people in hostage. The father of two explained:
“I am more fearful of large gatherings of young white men that come into schools, theaters and shoot people up, but we don’t isolate young white men on this issue.”
The Democratic mayor infuriated many viewers by saying that it is time to stop mixing the Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL) with Islam. He explained:
“Isis is no more Islamic than Nazi senior staff was Christian … I’m really anti what Isis is trying to do and I think we fall into the trap if we become xenophobic and paranoid about people in the Middle East.”
He went on to reveal that he would welcome refugees into his city despite Texas Governor Greg Abbott‘s harsh rhetoric against Syrians. More than 31 governors including Abbott have come out to say that they are against refugees settling in their states after the terrorist attacks that occurred in Paris and killed 130 people, including 89 at the Bataclan theatre.
During his interview on MSNBC, Rawlings said that he and Abbott were both concerned about the security of residents of the Lone State, but disagreed on the risk posed by refugees. He claimed:
“The safety of Dallasities is paramount in his mind and my mind as well. We want to get rid of Isis. We all agree with that. Isis wants us to be divided on this issue. Isis wants us to demonize these Syrian refugees, wants us to alienate these children.”
In a recent interview with The Dallas Morning News, Rawlings said he will have the immigrants vetted and will welcome them. He added:
“I would participate in any organized, thoroughly vetted programmed that the country asks Dallas to participate in to make sure people were resettled that were fleeing Isis and fleeing the terror that is there.”
Since 2014, a total of 224 refugees from Syria have been placed in Texas.
