The Mark Wahlberg Leonardo DiCaprio past drama was all about big egos. Wahlberg, who is featured in the December issue of The Hollywood Reporter, has confessed to being rude to DiCaprio in the early 1990s.

DiCaprio made sure he returned the favor to Wahlberg when they were cast in The Basketball Diaries in 1995.

The Basketball Diaries tells the story of Jim Carroll (played by DiCaprio), a promising teenage basketball player who develops an addiction to heroin with his friends.

Several lawsuits state that scenes from the film may have inspired the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, and the Heath High School shooting in 1997.

Wahlberg, who is promoting The Gambler, told the publication that fight started at a charity basketball game. Wahlberg who was known as Marky Mark, the lead singer/rapper of the Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch back then, said:

“We had a weird run in at an MTV Rock and Jock basketball game.I was performing in my underwear at half time and I think I had blocked a shot of his. I was a punk. I was a prick. I was not nice to Leo that day.”

In 1994, Wahlberg was approached by Scott Kalvert, who was directing The Basketball Diaries, and was offered the role of Mickey.

Wahlberg who was famous for walking around shirtless in Calvin Klein underwear was surprised by Kalvert’s words:

“He only said this to three people — Tupac, Will Smith and myself. He said, ‘You guys should be actor s and you will be actors.'”

Mark Wahlberg went on to reveal that he almost lost the role, because Leonardo DiCaprio refused to work with him. The actor said:

“He called me in for the film. Leonardo said, ‘No way, I’m not making a movie with Marky Mark.’ As did a lot of other people.”

Wahlberg did not believe that DiCaprio was fit for the role of Jim Carrol. Wahlberg told the publication”

“He wasn’t a New York street guy basketball player. I was like, ‘I’ve seen this dude play ball!’ So we both had a bit of chip on our shoulder.”

The Renaissance Man star revealed that during the audition, he was able to convince DiCaprio. He told the mag:

“So I come in and I do the audition and I kind of look at him and he kind of looks at me.And then we do a scene, and they’re like, ‘Hmm, this f—ing dude’s pretty good, right?’ The next thing you know, boom, we’re hanging out.”
