Hostess Recall

Put down that doughnut or Ding Dong because a new Hostess recall has been issued. Over the weekend, Hostess Brands, LLC via the FDA/ Food and Drug Administration announced yet another voluntary recall.

The giant producer of snack cakes is removing over 710,000 cases of certain mini cakes and donuts after discovering that there was a risk of peanut residue in the flour used to make the treats.

The bakery company was forced to issue the recall after receiving notice of two allergic reactions related to the products. According to health experts, the signs and symptoms of a peanut allergy can include:

“Runny nose. Skin reactions, such as hives, redness or swelling. Itching or tingling in or around the mouth and throat. Digestive problems, such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea or vomiting. Tightening of the throat. Shortness of breath or wheezing.”

On the recall list are Crunch Donut, Zinger Van Snack, and Chocodile Snack. The snacks were sold to grocery stores, distributors, dollar stores, drug stores, and convenience stores in all 50 states and Mexico.

Anyone, who has purchased an affected product and who is allergic to peanuts, is asked to either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions or comments may contact Hostess at 1.800.686.2813. The FDA had the following to say on the matter:

“While those who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume products containing peanut allergens the amount of peanut exposure from use of the flours and affected products is considered to be low and not expected to cause adverse health effects in the vast majority of peanut allergic consumers.”
