Hermila Garcia: Mexico Female Police Chief Murdered
Another police chief was murdered in Mexico recently, this time a 38-year old woman by the name of Hermila Garcia was killed as she was on her way to work Monday. Garcia had only been the chief of police for the town of Meoqui since Oct. 9. Before she took the post, she was a trained lawyer.
Around 7:20 am, a convoy of gunmen found her on her way to work and shot her in the town of Los Garcia, which is located roughly 10 kilometers away from Meoqui. Garcia was in control of nearly 90 police agents residing in a mostly agricultural state.
Garcia did not carry any weapons or have any bodyguards to protect her, as she believed that “If you don’t owe anything, you don’t fear anything.”
She was living with her parents, and was in charge of supporting them financially. Mexico has seen a rise in drug related crimes ever since President Felipe Calderon took office and declared war on the drug cartels. In fact, being a police man has become such a dangerous job, that many men will not step up to take the positions, and they are now being filled by women in the area.
