Foss Lake 6 Missing Identified

The 6 bodies found in Foss Lake in Oklahoma, one year ago, have been identified as adults who went missing in 1969 and 3 teens who vanished the following year.

In September of 2013, police from the small town of Sayre were testing sonar equipment in Foss Lake when they made a disturbing discovery. Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers found two cars containing 6 bodies.

Authorities located a green 1952 Chevrolet with the remains of 3 adults and a blue 1969 Chevrolet Camaro with the bodies of 3 teenagers along with several guns.

Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner worked with National Missing and Unidentified Persons System to gather missing person case information.

The Chief Medical Examiner had DNA testing done at the UNT Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas, in order to identify the 6 individuals and contact their families.

The bodies pulled from the 1952 Chevrolet were identified as John Alva Poter, 69, from Elk City, Cleburn Hammack, 42, of Sayre and Nora Duncan, 58, of Canute. The three friends vanished in 1969.

The bodies recovered from the 1969 blue Chevy Camaro were identified as Jimmy Williams, 16, Leah Johnson, 18, who was a Native American and 18-year-old Thomas Rios. The three teens were from Sayre.

Johnson was regarded as a princess because she was related to legendary Indian chief, Sitting Bull. The teens disappeared in 1970, after they told relatives, they were going for a ride around town.

The 3 friends had plans to attend a football game, the night they went missing. Williams purchased the car, 6 days before he died.

The Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office believe all 6 people drowned in Foss Lake.
