After 30 long years a Brazilian family has found their long lost tortoise.

The Almeidas were doing some cleaning and repairing in their Rio de Janeiro home in 1982 when their beloved pet tortoise named Manuela went missing.

The family assumed that Manuela found an open door/window and fled.

Now let us move forward to 2012 – after the patriarch of the home Leonel Almeida passed away, the family entered his storage room in order to tidy up and that is when they found the animal hiding box that contained a record player.

Leandro who is the son of Leonel Almeida told Brazil’s Globo G1 website that his neighbor is the one who spotted Manuela while he was throwing the trash away and added:

“I put the box on the pavement for the rubbish men to collect, and a neighbour said, “you’re not throwing out the turtle as well are you?I looked and saw her. At that moment, I turned white, I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

According to experts the tortoise survived by eating bugs and other dead animals.
