Columbus Day 2010: Is There School On October 11 Holiday – Columbus Day is being celebrated in America and in Canada on this Monday October 11, 2010 and just like the previous years schools, libraries and most banks are closed.
Columbus Day became a national holiday back in 1934 thanks to the Knights of Columbus who worked diligently to persuade both Congress and President Franklin Roosevelt into signing Columbus Day into law as a federal holiday.
Today is the day we honor Christopher Columbus- the brave explorer who discovered many countries in the New World in 1492 and proved to the religious elite of his time that the world was not flat.
Despite being considered a hero by most- history also paints a horrible portrait of the traveler who was a rapist, a murderer and slave trader.
