CeeLo Green and his girlfriend are engaged to be married. Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, AKA CeeLo Green, recently sat down for an interview with PEOPLE to talk about his new album Heart Blanche that will be out November 6 and made a surprising revelation.

Green shared that over a year ago he proposed to his girlfriend, Shani James, while he was recording the album. The former Voice coach said he had the ring in the studio with him for several months, and when the time was right, he did the following:

“I went and purchased a ring that we had seen together, maybe four or five months or so prior. I went back and purchased the ring and I just kind of had it stashed away in some old equipment. And I said, ‘Will you reach in there and grab something for me?”

James, who has yet to debut her bling, said it was the most beautiful ring she had ever seen. The bride-to-be confessed:

“It was the most beautiful diamond ring I had ever seen in my life. It was lit up by a light. I said, ‘What is that?’ He just looked at me and said, ‘Well…?’ And I was just like ‘Oh my goodness. I said, ‘Babe, I can’t believe it. He said, ‘You’ve been such a good woman. You’re such and amazing person. You’re my life partner. You’re my best friend. I want to share the rest of my life with you.”

The “Anyway” singer said that he sincerely appreciates James for showing love and support for the past years as he went through a very difficult period, which began in 2012 when he was accused of sexual battery by a woman he was dating.

In 2013, he pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of furnishing a controlled substance after the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office failed to charge him of raping an intoxicated person, citing insufficient evidence. Green claimed that he and the woman had a habit of doing drugs before engaging in sexual activities, she claimed he had turned into a predator, he took her to dinner, slipped something in her wine and she woke up the next day naked in his hotel room.

In 2014, Green pleaded no contest to one felony count of furnishing Ecstasy and was sentenced to three years of formal probation, 360 hours of community service, and ordered to complete 52 Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings. That same year, he was also fired from The Voice. Green explained:

“I appreciate her openness and willingness to love unconditionally. She’s been so sweet to me through a number of different trials that come to test the resilience of a union to deem whether it’s worthy or not, whether it’s durable or strong enough.”

This is the second time the “Fuck You” artist will walk down the aisle. His five-year marriage to Christina Johnson, with whom he has a son and two stepdaughters ended in 2005.
