Hy-Vee black bean recall linked to plastic and metal

A voluntary black bean recall is in effect. Hy-Vee has announced that it is pulling thousands of cans of non-salted black beans after discovering a pen in one can.

On Thursday, Hy-Vee, an employee-owned chain of 240 supermarkets located throughout the Midwestern United States, announced that it was issuing a recall of its canned black beans.

The company, which runs stores in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin said that it was pulling 15-ounce cans of Hy-Vee No-Salt-Added Black Beans because of a potential plastic and metal contamination.

The presence of plastic and metal in the beans can lead to choking and severe health issues. According to the company:

The potential for contamination was discovered after Faribault Foods, Inc., Hy-Vee’s supplier, announced it was issuing a recall after one consumer reported finding a partial ink pen in one container. The product was manufactured at the company’s Faribault, Minn., facility, which supplies several major retailers across the United States. Faribault Foods, Inc. has determined this to be an isolated incident.

Thus far, there has been no reports of injuries, nonetheless the West Des Moines, Iowa-based company has decided to issue a voluntary recall of 15-ounce cans of Hy-Vee No-Salt-Added Black Beans with the code “Best By 04 APR 2019 258F2 095 16 XXXX” and UPC number of 0075450105190.

The item was placed on shelves at Hy-Vee stores in the following states: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin between April 22, 2016, and July 18, 2016. The following products may be affected:

People, who bought this product, should either throw them away or return it to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund.
