Amy Inita Joyner-Francis‘ alleged attackers have been arrested and charged.

Earlier this week, two significant questions – (how did she die and who is responsible for her death?) – were answered in the Amy Inita Joyner-Francis case. Joyner-Francis died at the age of 16 after being involved in a fight over a boy in the girls bathroom at Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington, Delaware.

It was initially believed that the teen died after hitting her head on the sink, but the Medical examiners have ruled Joyner-Francis’ death a cardiac failure stemming from a heart defect with a contributing factor of physical and emotional stress from the assault. According to Delaware authorities:

“In layman’s terms, the Medical Examiner determined that Amy died from a cardiac incident that she was vulnerable to because of a pre-existing heart condition, but the cardiac incident would not have occurred if she had not been assaulted.”

The state Attorney General’s Office has also announced that three girls – Trinity Carr, 16, Zion Snow, and Chakeira Wright – have been arrested and charged.

While it has been proven that all three teenagers had planned to meet on April 22 before classes to fight with Joyner-Francis, a video showed that only Miss Carr punched her in the head and chest. Wright and Snow have been charged with third-degree criminal conspiracy, punishable by up to one year in prison as for Carr; she is charged with criminally negligent homicide, punishable by up to eight years in prison.

Wilmington Mayor Dennis Wilmington issued a statement saying that it was a terrible tragedy. Williams stated:

“From the beginning, the Wilmington Police Department and the Department of Justice worked hand-and-hand to determine the appropriate charges. This is just the first step toward providing Amy’s family and our community with closure. I ask that we keep the family and loved ones of everyone involved in our thoughts and prayers.”

Speaking a day after her shocking death, Amy Inita’s father, Sonny Francis, shared:

“I thought schools were a safe place. I think this is a dream and I’m trying to wake up. All I know is my daughter is gone. She was the love of my life and it hurts.”
