ABC cancelled five shows and decided to renew a lot more (Fresh Off the Boat, Secrets and Lies, Castle, Galavant and American Crime among others.)

Few days ago, the cancellation of Revenge was announced. The primetime soap opera starring Madeleine Stowe and Emily VanCamp will air its last episode on Sunday after four seasons. Revenge saw a spectacular decline in ratings in recent years and the news did not come as a big surprise. The May 3rd episode was watched by less than 5 million people.

On Thursday night, the Alphabet network announced the cancellations of Cristela, Resurrection, Forever, and The Taste.
Cristela, a fan favorite sitcom about the Latino immigrant experience, was never able to deliver in ratings. The semi-autobiographical comedy starring Cristela Alonzo aired its finale on April 17 and it was watched by close to 5 million viewers. Alonzo has been very active on Twitter, sharing her feelings and thoughts on the end of Cristela.

Another cancelled ABC show is Forever, starring Ioan Gruffudd, that has a loyal following. It started strong in ratings, but it was not able to sustain the interest of public. The finale was watched by close to 4 million viewers. Gruffudd took to Instagram to thank fans for their support.

My dear friends, fans, supporters. Tonight, as you all now know, I received a phone call that I was hoping not to receive, and to be honest I really wasn’t expecting it. I knew the numbers hadn’t been great, but I also knew the studio and the network both loved the show, and of course that it had an incredible fan base…so I thought we were in with a pretty good chance. But sadly no, this time the cards weren’t dealt in our favor. Show business is like that. Hell, life is like that. You ride to the top of the wave and then you come crashing down again. I asked Alice to send out the sad news because I was a little bit shaken up and needed time to gather my thoughts. So I sat down and started reading the thousands of Tweets in response to the announcement. And the more I read, the more I couldn’t believe it. The love, the sense of solidarity, the hope, the kindness, the support. Not just for the show, but for each other. And slowly I began to focus on what we had gained in the past year, rather than what we had lost in the last five minutes. I was overcome by a sense of gratitude. To have met you all and to have you all rooting for me and the show. At having a chance to play the role of my dreams, even if it was only for a year. To have been given the chance to bring Henry to life. Watching the interaction of the FOREVER fans come together and share their love for the show has been breath-taking. It was you guys who held me up when I thought I could no longer go on. (Those days were LONG!) You made me smile when you pointed out the little things I did on screen that I thought had gone unnoticed. You gave me confidence when I accidentally found myself reading less than shining reviews. You were always with me, every step of the way, waving your flags, shouting your support for the show. It’s been an incredible, wonderful year, one that I will never, ever forget. And guess what? The memories belong to us. We get to keep them ‘forever!’ Thanks again a million times for your unwavering support. Stay strong, be brave, and show kindness as often as you can! Ioan xxx

Resurrection got cancelled after two seasons. The first season was a big hit in ratings, but the second one did not get as much love. The last episode aired on January 25 and was seen by less than 4 million people. Landon Gimenez, who played Jacob Langston on the show, was very gracious on Twitter after the news broke.

Omar Epps, the star of Resurrection, also tweeted:

Primetime food show The Taste was cancelled after three seasons.

What are thoughts on the shows that ABC cancelled?

    1. I won’t miss them, since I never saw them. In the case of shows such as “Forever,” I don’t watch shows where every episode starts with the words “Previously, on [name of show]”; as for “The Taste,” I hate these so-called “reality” shows (which are actually anything but). It was a sad day when TV became infected by the likes of The KarTRASHians and Honey Poo Poo.

    1. I loved that show. I will miss it also. They always cancel the good shows.

  1. ABC messed up by dumping Revenge, love me some Emily, hate Victoria because she was so good.

  2. I absolutely adored this show. I don’t think the network got it right. Superb acting, I quite enjoyed it every time.

    Best to you all!!

    Tosha

  3. I loved Resurrection and Forever and now they are both gone. I take a chance each season on the “different”, “unique” and “quirky” shows that show true imagination. I get hooked and then usually they don’t survive. I’ll keep trying as the run of the mill shows bore me to tears, but it gets harder and harder to invest in shows the networks usually don’t support. How sad! Of course the raunchy sitcoms I won’t waste my time on are renewed year after year.

    1. Resurrection was a good show, all the characters were interesting.
I guess I will start catching up on The Return it is more a less the same idea- dead people come back to small town like Arcadia and all goes crazy.

  4. I will miss Forever….it was a great show. Castle was getting a little stale…especially once Castle and Beckett got married. That seems to always kill a show when the 2 main characters get married. This season was mostly a bore.

  5. I will miss Forever and Resurrection! The actors are amazing and the story line made you want to watch.

  6. So sad to see Forever be cancelled, I loved the show, I thought the characters were awesome and it was very well reserched. As far as Cristela, it was offending in soooo many levels!

  7. So sorry to lose Forever. It was the only one of those cancelled that I watched. Sign. Please cancel The Bachelor, Bachelorette, etc.

  8. Losing all interest in ABC. Used to be my favorite, but they have let me down too many times.

  9. I am really disappointed in ABC .I used to watch ABC all the time ,I had decided to give it another chance by watching Castle , and Forever with you cancelling Forever I am truly disappointed in ABC again ! BOO TO ABC bring back FOREVER !

  10. I can’t believe ABC cancelled Revenge and Resurrection. But I do have to say for Revenge the story needs to move forward. Enough with all the revenging. But still bring both those shows back.

  11. I hope forever gets picked up by another network; the acting and the storyline was excellent.

  12. I never missed one episode of “Revenge” “Resurrection” and “Cristela.” I’ve watched “Forever” a couple of times and it was pretty good. My wife had liked the “Taste.” It sucks to see good shows go.

  13. ABC is out of touch with viewers by cancelling Forever and Revenge. I wished they were able to move Forever in a different time slot instead of going against some top shows on CBS and NBC. I am going to ban watching ABC for a while.

  14. I am sick of good shows being cancelled and shows with no backbone continuing on … Cristela was hilarious. Revenge and forever were great too! ABC better think about what they keep because they are losing their “watchers” quickly!

    1. My jaw dropped when I heard ABC axed “Forever” and “Cristela.” Those were two of my favorite shows this year; “Forever” was a good, old-fashioned mystery in the vein of “The Pretender,” and “Cristela” was not only funny, it showed an ethnic working-class family in a *positive* light for once.

And “Galavant” got renewed? That mini-series was really *dumb.* I tuned it out after the first five minutes of the first episode.

I stopped watching Fox ages ago and now, like Jeni, I too will eliminate ABC from my remote. They *definitely are* out of touch with the public if they cancel a well-done drama like “Forever” and renew goofy crap like “Galavant!”

  15. Forever… My favorite show. ABC is not in tune with their viewers. Wish another network will pick it up. Fantastic show. I will “Forever” miss it.

  16. Forever was very promising at the beginning but ran out of gas, to me it was just “Castle” version 2.

  17. Can someone explain why was American Crime renewed because to my understanding the ratings are as low dirt. The show is well done and the actors are very talented, but no one is watching it.
Hope Last Man Standing comes back.

  18. I am sorry t9 hear you cancelled Cristal. I LOVED that show. It was
Refreshing… bad mistake on ABC .

  19. The cast should have swallowed their pride and take a pay cut in order to keep the show going. Maybe they were all tired of Queen Victoria dying and resurrecting and Emily doing the darnest of things and never getting caught. Anyway I will watch the big finale next week to see if Ems stays in jail forver and fails to get Jack back.
I miss Danielle he was silly, Louise is hilarious with that southern accent and Margot is Paris in a dress.

    1. I agree, Victoria should have died and Margot could take over as the new foe.
If they just leave us hanging with no closure it will be the last damn ABC program I watch ever.

  20. I’ll miss Forever, one of the few newer shows we enjoyed. I don’t understand how these decisions are made but I think this was a bad one.

  21. I am so disappointed with ABC. I really enjoyed Resurrection and Forever. I am already sick of Off the Boat. Seems ABC just get it right. Galavant should have been a mini-series and ended. It’s not the stuff TV series are made of. SMH

  22. “Resurrection” will not be missed. The plotting was so freaking slow that very little ever got done in the hour allotted. The French version, “The Returned”, which “Resurrection” is based on is a superior show in every way. I look forward to seeing more of the French version show up on Netflix. Though I didn’t watch “Forever” consistently, when I did watch it, it was enjoyable. I’m glad it had a “tidy” ending since it will not be renewed (though the solution was reminiscent of the same solution used in an episode of “Scandal” but still very effective!).

  23. Forever was the best show. I only watched 3 shows on ABC. I wish they’d renew or another network would pick it up.

  24. this is why I watch cable stations, resurrection and revenge???really???this other crap you have on TV is not worth watching, but you’ll keep showing the crappy shows..I’m done with this ABC.

  25. Very disappointed that Forever has been cancelled. The writing was good, the characters were interesting and engaging and the premise, while not new, had not been developed for the small screen—- it also didn’t have zombies or vampires—yea!!!! Like the others writing before me, the reasons don’t seem—well, reasonable. Castle had been stale, but lately has begun to pick up again. However, if Stanic doesn’t sign, what will they do with the show? I propose putting Forever in its place. I hate Shark tank, I hate reality, I am so tired of the clones on TV. Maybe I’ll just turn it off.

    1. OMG! I couldn’t agree more. I loved Forever, they had me deep in that show and was looking forward to another season. ABC is not getting me back after this slap. Really loved the cast, great chemistry.

    2. Agreeded! Forever is the one show I really looked forward to watching. I am very disappointed in ABC. Bring it back or I keep my fingers crossed another network will pick it up. Forever was entertaining, love the actors and how they all worked so well together. I could come home from a long day of frying my brain at work and enjoy the show without too much engery, just relaxation. It will be greatly missed by us all.

  26. I really liked Forever & Resurrection!! SO DISAPPOINTED!!! Both were very entertaining. Loved Forever, the actors, stories…Oh well, I’m sure they will plop in another “Reality” show or a really bad “forced comedy about…let me think. a bunch of mindless morons living together” AH YES…we need more of those…

  27. I just hope that another network will take a chance and pick up Forever..it was TERRIFIC!!

  28. Misery loves company. Not only ABC screwed fans over. CBS, NBC dumped some nice shows this season. read and weep.

    1. My wife was so angry that Heart of Dixie was cancelled.
She looked forward to that show every week. We are both fans of Heigl and felt bad that she lost her show. She seems like a wonderful lady by the way she carries herself and talks of her Mormon roots.

  29. As long as modern family is on ABC is happy.
Not much wholesome, family oriented show left on TV these days.
That is why my teens are going to bible study and reading the word of God instead of watching TV.

  30. I never missed one episode of Revenge. I can’t believe you canceled it.
    So mad…….

  31. I don’t know what the future holds for the show but whatever it is, I can say that I am proud of what we’ve done.I think we employed more Latinos than any other show on the air right now. I tried to honor the art form known as the multi-cam sitcom. I tried to honor my family and show them in a real way. That was not an easy feat.
Cristela was gracious at first, because that is what she said before it was confirned that her was over.
But after that she got really bitter and made minorities looked angry.
they gave her two chances and the ratings didn’t follow through.

    Represent your community better.

  32. More of a fan of Power and The Outlander along with The Return – shows on cable network stay longer.
Netflix has been getting good over the years, gotta say nothing beats watching an entire season a new show in one day.
You get what you pay for.

  33. The taste was a strange idea fro get go.
one spoon of food, c mom.
Bring Paula Deen to ABC so she can cook a whole pig for ya’ll.

  34. Cristela was one the only shows I could watch with my kids because it had no inappropriate content.
Those idiots. Why do they keep all those insane reality shows on the air?

  35. Among the shows renewed are Nashville, Marvel’s Agent Carter,Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, American Crime, Secrets and Lies, Modern Family, The Middle, Black-ish, Fresh Off the Boat, The Goldbergs, Dancing With the Stars, The Bachelor, America’s Funniest Home Videos, Shark Tank,
Guess what I only used to watch Forever and they dump.Maybe I should do like the rest of the world watch the House Wives Of —— and The Kardashians or all the CSIs out there.

  36. I’m done watching anything on ABC, in fact I think I’m gonna ask my DirecTV if there’s a way I can delete the network off my service!!

  37. Forever was one of my favorite shows on ABC, but now there’s nothing left to watch on ABC anymore, so one more ABC, so disappointed, the season finale was so good, was hoping for season 2, but hopefully another station will pick it up.

  38. I cannot believe they are cancelling Forever, Resurrection and Revenge. I am a faithful fan of all three shows. My husband really enjoyed Forever and Resurrection. He lost interest in Revenge. I am also pissed off they cancelled The Following, State of Affairs and Constantine. They were great shows too! I really enjoyed the story lines to all of these shows. What are these networks thinking? What is left reality TV?

  39. Not sure whom makes the choices to keep or remove shows, but letting “Forever” go is a mistake. Hope another company will see the sense in picking up this show for further production. Great job to the whole cast of Forever!

  40. I am beyond disappointed with ABC and NBC. I’m starting to think these people wouldn’t know a good show if it bit them in the ass. Cristela is such a good and funny show. I looked forward to my Friday nights with Last Man Standing (thank you for not cancelling that one) followed by Cristela. Why would you ever get rid of that show? Why not give them a chance to get going? I can’t believe some really good shows are being cancelled, but yet all that reality crap remains. Maybe instead of cleaning out shows they should clean house at the networks and get rid of the stupid people making these decisions!!!

  41. It’s very disappointing to hear ABC cancelled FOREVER. This was a show that offered something out of the ordinary. There were always fascinating cases and the approach wasn’t the typical crime series. The characters were fantastic, the storyline worked into each episode smoothly and with a great twist. It’s much cheaper to stick in a “reality” show – what total wastes of time. So sad that creativity and originality aren’t of any interest to the network. Another mistake and misread by the network. I, too, hope another network realizes they have a good opportunity to pick up a great show in FOREVER. Thanks to the cast for a great production.

  42. It is BS that they have these stupid “reality” shows still on the air, yet cancel something like Resurrection and the Following. Those shows were different, interesting, entertaining and I was able to watch them with my wife and we both be satisfied.

ABC you suck, can’t wait to see what GARBAGE you decide to replace them with.

  43. ABC and NBC love to renew sitcoms. Quality dramas don’t seem to have a shot on these networks unless they have a high profile on social media. I watched “Forever,” saw that it was an excellent show and knew that ABC would cancel it in fairly short order, as they’ve done with quality dramas in past. They did. I saw the writing on the wall with “Resurrection” as well. “Shark Tank” and “Dancing with the Stars” survived somehow, again. That’s the network you’re dealing with. NBC is just as bad, yet these networks wonder why viewers are increasingly turning to cable shows like “Game of Thrones,” “The Walking Dead,” “Outlander,” “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad,” and “Power.” Pay attention to the Primetime Emmy nominations each year. You’ll see just how badly network television is doing against cable, and now against streaming services like Netflix when it comes to producing quality shows.

  44. who are they talking to when the determine a show isn’t cutting it, its not all the people that watch it, forever was a great, clean show with excellent actors in it, if ABC was going to cancel it they should have at least given the loyal viewers the satisfaction of letting him and the detective get together. if you are going to break so many hearts by taking the show off the air, at least do it with a great ending, ill miss all the actors and the good clean show they stared in. shame on ABC
