Missing Boy Billy Hanson Found Niue

Missing boy, Billy Hanson, was found safe on the island country of Niue and is doing well. On September 4th, Billy Hanson went sailing with his father, Jeffrey Ford Hanson, on his 1976 White Cooper sailboat, named the Draco, somewhere in the Pacific Ocean and the pair was never seen or heard from again.

According to the boy’s mother, Joanna Hanson, he was supposed to spend some quality time with his father on the boat that was docked at the Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle, Washington.

Billy Hanson was expected to take a flight back to Hazleton, Pennsylvania and start school the following day. When Jeffrey Ford Hanson failed to return the child to his mother, she contacted the authorities. Mrs Hanson told the media, the day her boy went missing:

“I love my son, and I want him back.”

Seeing that the father and son were traveling by boat, it took a very impressive and diverse group of people to find them. The FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Seattle Police Department’s Major Crimes Task Force, the Port of Seattle Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, were all instrumental in finding the missing boy.

Due to Hanson’s great sailing abilities, the FBI and nautical experts from the U.S. Coast Guard believed that the boat was heading towards Mexico, an island in the Pacific, or the Hawaiian archipelago.

On Thursday, FBI Seattle bureau spokesperson, Ayn Dietrich-Williams, revealed that the missing boy was found on the island of Niue. Dietrich-Williams said:

“The search for missing 9-year-old Billy Hanson ends after local authorities in Niue located him safe on the island country in the South Pacific Ocean. Meanwhile, his noncustodial father/alleged kidnapper is in custody in Niue. Billy’s family has been notified, and authorities are now working to reunite Billy with his mother.”

Niue is located about 1,500 miles northeast of New Zealand. The FBI is making arrangements to fly the boy to his mother in Pennsylvania.

Jeffrey Ford Hanson is in custody in Niue while the FBI, the Seattle Police and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, work on the extradition process. Mr Hanson will be charged with international parental kidnapping.
